Counselling and Parenting Support

We offer counselling and educational services to support parents and children at all stages of the parenthood journey – from pregnancy through to early preschool years.

Transitioning through pregnancy and into parenthood is an enormous life adjustment. It can be a time of mixed emotions for the individual, the couple, and the family unit as a whole. Joy, excitement and wonder can be coupled with anxiety, apprehension, sadness and disconnect. Using evidence based techniques in a safe, caring and confidential space, we can help you embrace your pregnancy, birth and role as a new parent. We can help you to find workable solutions so that you can make the most of everyday as you navigate parenthood.

Individuals and Couples

Are you expecting a baby and feeling anxious?

Are you struggling with your new role as parent?

Are you feeling disconnected or frustrated in your relationship?

We understand that individuals and couples can be challenged by a variety of issues relating to pregnancy, birth, the postnatal period and beyond. New parenthood is a roller coaster of an experience that can send each partner into different directions and we know that relationship satisfaction often declines during those early post-partum days.

Let us support you to overcome your differences, better adjust to the changes and improve your well-being so that you can work more effectively as a team to raise your baby, and yourselves!

We will help you to:

  • Improve communication, intimacy, and effective conflict resolution with your partner and family
  • Process any unresolved past issues or trauma that might be affecting you and your relationships
  • Understand why couples can naturally grow apart and learn how to grow together again.
  • Better manage the adjustment into parenthood
  • Resolve confusion around changing roles and responsibilities
  • Process some of the losses related to parenthood
  • Deal with ‘Mother guilt’ and “Motherwhelm” (Dads can feel it too!)
  • Reduce and manage stress, anxiety and fatigue
  • Improve your psychological health and well-being including post-natal depression and anxiety
  • Improve your motivation, confidence and self esteem
  • Experiment with new ways of seeing your world and find ways to “let go”.
  • Build resilience and empowerment through self-exploration, self-knowledge and coping skills
  • Develop new insights to old problems and strategies for dealing with current issues

“Sometimes we need that little bit of support to help you peel back the layers and process what’s going on beneath.”

Parents and Children

Are you struggling with your childs’ developmental needs?

Are you dealing with difficult toddler or preschool behaviour?

Would you like some strategies to better attend to your childs’ needs?

Many new Mums and Dads find parenting much harder than they expected, and this catches them by surprise. They may feel they are failing or alone because everyone else seems to be OK…on the surface at least. Every child is unique and they don’t come with an instruction manual (if only!), so it can be confusing and confronting when your child presents new or challenging needs or behaviours. All parents need support at some point in their child’s development.

Parenting, like any job – requires a set of skills that develop over time. Although it may feel or look as if it comes naturally, many parenting skills can be learnt, practised and improved upon. At The Parents Village, we can help you understand your child’s developmental needs and behaviour, and build a toolkit of strategies to ensure that your family thrives instead of survives.

There is no such thing as a ‘perfect’ parent, but there is such a thing as effective parenting. Effective parenting meets the physical, cognitive and emotional needs of children. It stimulates and nurtures children so they develop into skilled, self-reliant, empathetic individuals who relate well to others. These core functions of parenting are universally important.

We will help you to:

  • Increase awareness and encourage mindful parenting and secure attachment
  • Learn creative coping strategies to deal with difficult toddler and preschooler behaviours
  • Understand your child’s developmental needs
  • Navigate common parenting concerns such as sibling rivalry, anxiety, bullying, tantrums and resistance
  • Improve your child’s and your own well-being by influencing the nature and quality of your parent-child interactions and relationships

Counselling is a process of understanding yourself and your life in order to make positive changes, achieve growth and gain fulfilment. The Parents Village offers a space for you to: explore and understand your feelings and behaviour, resolve emotional pain and gain insight into your relationships.

Sharing your experience in a safe and confidential space with one of our skilled counsellors can feel liberating, relieving and empowering. Research shows that accessing support early on can help you to explore, process and resolve your concerns, and confidently cope within your new role so that you can enjoy all the beauty that parenthood has to offer.

At The Parents Village we use a variety of evidence based techniques to provide high quality therapeutic support and advice. Some of the these include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy
  • Interpersonal therapy
  • Behavioral activation
  • Mindfulness based techniques
  • Creative Therapy  – This speciality incorporates the use of art, drama, music, movement, story telling, ritual and play into counselling. These creative approaches allow clients additional options for conveying and understanding their feelings, particularly in times when words are not enough.
